All the Income Tax Offices to remain open on a closed holiday on account of Mahavir Jayanti on 31st March, 2026 : Order under section 119 of Income-tax Act 1961
Specially for government employees and taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued an order dated 18.03.2026 under Section 119 of the Income-tax Act, 1961. As per the order, all Income Tax Offices across the country shall remain open on 31st March 2026 i.e. a closed holiday on account of Mahavir Jayanti. Since the financial year 2025-26 is coming to a close. The decision has been made so that pending work of the department is completed well in time and there is no last-minute rush. This is particularly significant for Income Tax Department employees and stakeholders who deal with financial matters related to the end of the financial year. Offices shall be functioning normally on this day to ensure administrative efficiency.

The Financial Year 2025-26 closes on 31st March, 2026 (Tuesday), which is a Closed Holiday on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti.
2. Therefore, to facilitate completion of pending departmental work, all the Income Tax Offices throughout India shall remain open on 31st March, 2026. This direction is issued for administrative convenience by the Central Board of Direct Taxes in exercise of powers conferred under section 119 of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
